Declaration

For my concept I chose the seven deadly sins. The seven deadly sins are wrath, lust, pride, greed, sloth, envy, and gluttony. They are also known the cardinal sins or the capital vices. They were originally used in early Catholic teachings to educate followers concerning fallen man’s tendency to sin. I chose this concept because I have always been interested in the seven deadly sins. Also I enjoy learning about dark mysterious things like that. I feel like everyone relates to the seven deadly sins whether you believe in them or not, because we all are guilty of committing a minor deadly sin. I think that writing narratives about the seven deadly sins will be a good time because you can pretty much write about anything because everything relates to it.

Self Portraits

“Self Portrait as a Young Man” 1629-1631 “Vincent Van Gogh in a self- Portrait Painted by Rembrandt Van Rihj in Amsterdam 1887 Painted by Vincent Van Gogh in Holland

“Self Portrait with Hand on Brow” 1910 “Self Portrait dedicated to Carrière” Painted by Kathe Kollwitz in Germany 1888 or 1889, Painted by Paul Gauguin In Peru

“Self Portrait in Black Shirt” 1969 “Self Portrait with Cloak” 1901Painted by Gregory Gillespie and Painted by Pablo Picasso Frances Cohen Gillespie in New York in Chez Republic

“Self Portrait” 1879- 1885 “Self Portrait (masque, queen helene) Painted by Paul Cezanne in Russia 2001, Painted by Susanna Coffey in America

“Self Portrait in Civil War Hat” 2003Painted by Brett Gamache in America

PART TWO!!!
“Self Portrait in Black Shirt” by Frances Cohen Gillespie, “Self Portrait with Cloak” by Pablo Picasso, and “Self Portrait (masque, queen helene)” by Susanna Coffey are all comparable to each other. All three of the self portraits use cool colors in the background which makes the self portrait part stand out more. Also the moods for Frances Cohen Gillespie and Pablo Picasso are both very dark and mysterious whereas Susanna Coffey’s is kinda bright and cheery in a way.
PART THREE!!! I think “Self Portrait as a Young Man” by Rembrandt Van Rihj is the strongest self portrait. It is the most realistic looking one out of all of them. The artist used warms colors and different shades of the same colors. The value of the color is all mostly dark, and the field is mostly shadowy and gets brighter towards the middle. The realism of the self portrait seems to be accurate to how he really looked as a young man.
PART FOUR!!!
I think artists choose to focus on self portraits as a way of expressing themselves even more than expressing themselves through their other works of art. It shows the viewer how the artist feels about themself. It also shows the viewer how the artist seems himself and the way the artist wants others to view them as well.

Critique #1

Gluttony

The sculpture “Supermarket Lady” was created by artist Duane Hanson in 1969. The sculpture depicts a slightly overweight middle aged woman pushing a grocery cart. The cart is filled to the top with all different kinds of food. The woman is dressed very casually with her hair in a bandana and hair curlers. She is dressed in a plain button up pink shirt with a dark blue skirt and light blue shoes. Around her neck she is a wearing a bright yellow necklace. Hanging from her wrist is long black purse. The woman herself is made out of painted fiberglass, polyester. All the clothes she is wearing are real. The fiberglass and polyester is very smooth and there are shiny spots on her and her face is covered with breakouts. Also her arms have some spots of black and blue bruises. The cart she is pushing is an actual cart filled with actual groceries. Some of these groceries are things like cakes and other types of junk food and different kinds of sodas and drinks. There are also loaves of bread and boxes of frozen dinner. Perhaps the artist Duane Hanson is trying to show a problem in America which still exists today.

My Concept

For my concept, I chose the seven deadly sins. The seven deadly sins are gluttony, lust, greed, pride, envy, sloth, and wrath.
